Actor Jamie Farr, who was in the famous TV show “MAS*H,” has been married to his wife Jo Ann Richards for almost 60 years. Because Farr was having trouble making ends meet as an actor, he proposed in a simple way, without an engagement ring.
Farr needed work badly at the time and was doing odd jobs to make ends meet. He got his big break when he got a job on “The Dick Van Dyke Show.” The show’s creator, Danby Thomas, noticed him because he did something risky.
Farr’s time on the show was short, but his hard work paid off when he got a part in “The Greatest Story Ever Told.” After being turned down several times, this miraculous gig came along after he met St. Jude by chance and credited her with the change.
Max Von Sydow, who played Jesus in the movie, was one of the stars who attended the wedding. It took place in an Orthodox church. It was strange to be there, and the minister joked nervously that it was his first time working “in front of the boss.”
Farr’s career took off, but he never forgot how he got there or the “long dry years” that came before. He stayed loyal to Richards and finally gave her the engagement ring he had promised 13 years after they got married.
Farr surprised Richards with a 1.5-carat emerald ring at their favourite restaurant, where their whole family was present. The emotional act solidified their love, showing how powerful loyalty and persistence can be.
Farr and Richards’ 60-year marriage is now a bright example of one of Hollywood’s rare and lasting loves. As I think about their story, I remember that real partnership can get through anything, and that miracles can happen in the strangest places.
