The clock on the wall of our apartment ticked past 11:00 PM, its steady rhythm the only sound breaking the heavy silence. I rubbed my temples, my eyes burning from a grueling twelve-hour shift at the office. My shoulders ached, and my feet felt like lead. The only thing keeping me moving was the thought of my bed—the crisp sheets, the soft pillows, and the promise of a long, dreamless sleep to wash the day away.

I kicked off my shoes at the door, let my bag drop to the floor with a thud, and walked blindly into the bedroom in the dark. I didn’t even bother turning on the overhead light, opting instead for the dim, warm glow of my bedside lamp.

I pulled back the top blanket, ready to collapse. But as I leaned down, something caught my eye in the narrow, dark gap between the mattress and the wall.

I froze. My breath caught squarely in my throat.

Tucked tightly into the crevice, clinging to the dark wooden frame and the plaster wall, was a sprawling mass of stark-white, pebble-sized spheres. They were clustered together in tight, uniform bunches, looking terrifyingly organic. To make matters worse, a massive pile of them had spilled out from the shadows, scattering across the cold tile floor beneath the footboard.

In an instant, the exhaustion vanished, replaced by a cold spike of pure adrenaline. My skin crawled. Living in an old building, you expect the occasional spider or centipede, but this looked like something out of a science fiction movie. My mind instantly raced into a panicked tailspin of worst-case scenarios.

Are those snake eggs? Did a lizard find its way through the window and lay a clutch right where I lay my head every night? Is it some kind of toxic, rapidly growing fungus?

I backed away from…….
