Authorities Issue Major Update On Alaskan Bush People Star Matt Brown’s Death As Devastating Details Emerge
Fans of Alaskan Bush People are mourning the loss of reality TV star Matt Brown after authorities released a major update in the investigation into his death.
The former Discovery Channel personality, who spent years documenting his struggles with addiction and recovery, was found dead in Washington state after a days-long search near the Okanogan River.
Now, officials have confirmed new details.
Search began after witness made alarming report
Concern first arose on May 27 when a 911 caller reported seeing a man sitting in shallow water along the Okanogan River near Oroville, Washington.
According to authorities, the witness briefly looked away before hearing a sound and turning back to see the man face down in the water and drifting with the current. Search crews immediately responded, deploying boats, divers, sonar equipment, and K-9 units, but were initially unable to locate him.
The search continued for several days as fears grew that the missing man could be Brown.
His brother, Solomon Isaiah ‘Bear’ Brown, shared emotional updates online, telling fans the family was increasingly concerned by reports coming from the scene.
Brother reveals heartbreaking details
Bear later confirmed the devastating news in an emotional social media video.
“They found a body in the river a few hours ago, and it was positively identified as being Matt,” he said, per E! Online.
The reality star also revealed that their younger brother, Noah Brown, was among the group searching for Matt.
“Noah was with them and helped them pull the body out of the water,” Bear explained. “Noah identified him.”
Noah later shared his own emotional account, explaining that he had spent days assisting search teams.
“For the past couple of days, I’ve been working with search and rescue groups trying to locate the body,” he said.
“Today at 3:27, the group that I was working with located the missing body and I identified it as Matthew.”
He added: “My oldest brother, Matthew Brown, has passed away.”
Family had long worried about Matt
Brown became a fan favorite after appearing on Alaskan Bush People from its debut in 2014 until his departure from the series in 2019.
Over the years, he spoke openly about his battles with alcohol addiction and multiple stays in rehabilitation.
In a 2016 interview, Brown admitted he realized his drinking was becoming dangerous.
“I started drinking lightly and then it got to be more and more,” he said. “That’s when I saw the problem around the corner, and I didn’t want to be one of those guys.”
Following treatment, Brown frequently used YouTube and social media to discuss sobriety, self-improvement, and mental health.
But according to his family, the road was never easy.
The Browns said there had been years of “rehabilitation programs, interventions, treatment efforts, and countless attempts to support his recovery.”
Bear also revealed he had recently spoken to Matt after unexpectedly running into him.
According to Bear, Matt admitted he had relapsed.
“He called me after that, and he said that he had fallen off the wagon,” Bear recalled.
“And I was like, ‘Well, get back on it, man. Everybody falls off. Just get back on it. Go to rehab if you’ve got to. You’ve got this.’”

Brown’s final message to fans
In the wake of his death, many fans have revisited Brown’s social media pages.
One of his most discussed videos came in July 2024, when he spoke candidly about difficult periods in his life and the recovery tools he relied on to cope.
“It’s really important to sit down figure out what’s going on and what to do about it,” Brown told viewers.
“I have very good counselors in all of my rehabs and I pull all of those recovery tools.”
He explained that he used note cards to write down problems and potential solutions, helping him process difficult situations.
The video ended with a phrase that has since taken on heartbreaking significance for many fans.
Before signing off, Brown looked into the camera and said:
“All right, never give up, never surrender, guys.”
Authorities confirm how Brown was found
Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office have released a major update: according to The Hollywood Reporter, it was not law enforcement who ultimately located Brown.
Instead, authorities said a ‘group of private citizens’ conducting their own search along the river discovered a body in the water on May 30.
“On Saturday, May 30, 2026, a group of private citizens conducting a search along the Okanogan River located a deceased individual in the river,” the sheriff’s office said.
“The individual was recovered and brought to shore, where he was positively identified as Matthew Brown.”
Officials confirmed Brown’s body has since been transferred to the Okanogan County Coroner’s Office.
However, investigators stressed that the case remains active and that the official cause and manner of death have not yet been determined.
“The cause and manner of death will be determined by the Coroner’s Office,” the sheriff’s statement added.
Investigation remains ongoing
While Brown’s death has prompted widespread speculation online, authorities have not yet released an official cause of death.
The Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office has stated that no further information will be released while the investigation remains active.
The Brown family has urged fans to remember Matt for more than his struggles.
In a statement shared after his death, they described him as ‘intelligent, curious, creative, and endlessly fascinated by the world around him.’
“Those who truly knew Matt knew his heart,” the family said. “He was compassionate, generous with his time, and deeply wanted to help others.”
