Couple Charged Nearly $4,500 By Starbucks For Two Cups Of Coffee After Selecting ‘No Tip’ Option
A couple was charged nearly $4,500 for two cups of coffee at Starbucks after selecting the ‘no tip’ option.
Most people don’t think twice about buying coffee. You order your drink, tap your card, collect your cup, and move on with your day.
For one family, however, a routine drive-thru stop ended with thousands of dollars disappearing from their bank account and a financial headache that took weeks to resolve.
What should have been an ordinary coffee run quickly spiraled into a situation that left a couple scrambling for answers, repeatedly contacting customer service, and even canceling a major family trip.
Years later, the story is still attracting attention online as people struggle to understand how two drinks could somehow cost more than $4,500.
A routine Starbucks order turned into a nightmare
Back in January 2023, Jesse O’Dell and his wife Deedee visited their local Starbucks drive-thru in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Like many regular customers, they had a familiar order.
The couple purchased a venti iced Americano and a venti caramel Frappuccino with an additional shot of espresso.
The total came to $11.83. Nothing seemed unusual.
They paid, collected their drinks, and continued with their day without giving the transaction a second thought.
It wasn’t until two days later that they realized something was seriously wrong.
According to Jesse, the problem only came to light when Deedee attempted to make another purchase and her credit card was unexpectedly declined.
Concerned, Jesse checked their account balance.
What he found left him stunned. Instead of being charged $11.83, the transaction showed a total of $4,456.27.
A gratuity of $4,444.44 had somehow been added to the order.
“I entered no tip,” Jesse later explained. “But somehow, there’s a massive tip on it.”
The discovery immediately created financial stress for the family, who suddenly found thousands of dollars tied up while trying to determine what had happened.
The mistake had real-world consequences
The unexpected charge didn’t just create confusion.
It disrupted plans the family had been looking forward to for months.
Jesse and Deedee had been preparing for a family vacation to Thailand, where Deedee is originally from.
The trip would have allowed them and their four daughters to spend time with relatives overseas.
But with thousands of dollars suddenly missing from their account, the family felt they had little choice but to cancel.
“We had planned to take a trip but had to cancel, and the tickets are non-refundable,” Jesse said.
“We didn’t want to be traveling across the planet while they had thousands of dollars hung up somewhere.”
The O’Dells immediately contacted Starbucks in hopes of resolving the situation.
According to Jesse, the process wasn’t straightforward.
At first, he was reportedly informed that the charge appeared legitimate.
That response only increased the family’s frustration.
After all, they knew they hadn’t intentionally left a tip worth more than the price of a used car.
Determined to get answers, they continued contacting customer support.

Things get even more difficult
Eventually, Starbucks agreed that the charge was incorrect and arranged reimbursement.
But even then, the situation wasn’t over.
According to Jesse, the first reimbursement checks they received created a fresh problem.
The checks reportedly bounced.
Instead of finally putting the ordeal behind them, the family found themselves once again trying to contact the company for assistance.
“We contacted their customer service helpline probably 30 to 40 times that day and just blasted every new case that we could just until we could hear from somebody,” Jesse recalled.
After continued communication, a representative from Starbucks’ Seattle office reportedly assured the couple that replacement checks would be issued.
The new checks eventually arrived on February 6, 2023.
This time, the family was able to cash them successfully.
While the funds were ultimately returned, the process had already caused weeks of stress and uncertainty.
The experience also left the couple questioning whether they would ever return to the same Starbucks location.
Jesse later urged other customers to pay close attention to receipts and bank statements, warning that mistakes can sometimes go unnoticed until significant damage has already been done.
“This is something that has caused huge duress in our own family, and hopefully other people don’t have to go through something like this,” he said.
Starbucks finally addresses the incident
As the story resurfaced online years later, Starbucks issued a statement addressing what had happened.
A spokesperson described the incident as an unfortunate mistake that had already been resolved.
“This was an unfortunate situation that took place nearly two years ago and has long been resolved,” the company said.
“There was an error made regarding a customer tip at a Starbucks drive-thru, and we worked to address the situation as quickly as possible. Checks were issued and cashed by the customer on Monday, February 6, 2023.”
The company did not provide additional details regarding how the massive gratuity was entered in the first place.
The reimbursement was completed in 2023, and the company has maintained that the issue was resolved after replacement checks were successfully cashed.
