Amanda had grown up without a father. He had abandoned her and her mother when she was just a baby, leaving them to struggle alone. Over the years, she learned to suppress her pain, but when she came across his picture in a newspaper, all the anger she had buried resurfaced. He was smiling beside a young woman—his fiancée. Amanda clenched her fists. After all these years, he had moved on as if his past didn’t exist.
That night, she couldn’t sleep. She kept thinking about her mother, who had worked tirelessly to raise her. How could he have simply walked away? Amanda decided she wouldn’t let him get away with it. She would make him feel the same pain he had caused her mother.
The next morning, she drove to his house and waited. When she saw him leave with his fiancée, she carefully approached the house. An open window on the second floor caught her attention. Her childhood skills of climbing trees came in handy as she slipped inside. She made her way to the bedroom, placed an earring on the bed—one that belonged to her mother—and quickly left.
That evening, she knocked on his door. When his fiancée answered, Amanda put on her best act. “Is Robert home?” she asked innocently. “I left something here earlier.”
His fiancée looked confused. “You must be mistaken.”
Amanda sighed dramatically. “He told me I was the only one in his life. I should have known better.”
Robert appeared at the door, shocked to see her. “Amanda?”
His fiancée turned to him, suspicion written all over her face. “Who is she?”
Amanda smiled. “Maybe you should check your bedroom,” she suggested.
Moments later, his fiancée stormed out, furious. “We’re done, Robert!” she shouted before slamming the door.
Amanda walked away, satisfied. But a week later, she heard the news—Robert had still gotten married. Her revenge had failed. She realized that no matter what she did, it wouldn’t change the past. As she stood outside his house once more, she chose a different path. Instead of revenge, she knocked on the door, hoping for answers.
