On Tuesday, Ireland mourned the loss of a remarkable young girl, Saoírse Ruane, who courageously battled cancer for years. Her family announced her passing with heavy hearts, remembering her strength, dignity, and resilience.
Saoírse’s journey began in 2019 when she was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer, Osteosarcoma, after complaining of an injured ankle. Her leg was amputated in 2020, but her spirit remained unbroken.
The nation fell in love with Saoírse during her appearance on the Late Late Toy Show in 2020. Her story inspired countless people, showcasing her bravery and determination. Despite the cancer spreading to her lungs, Saoírse continued to fight, undergoing chemotherapy and touching the lives of many.
Tributes poured in from President Michael D. Higgins, Tanaiste Micheal Martin, and celebrities across Ireland. Ryan Tubridy, who befriended Saoírse and her family, remembered her as “selfless, humble, kind, hopeful, and thoughtful” – a shining example of Ireland’s spirit.
Roz Purcell, Patrick O’Mahony, Kathryn Thomas, and Declan Pierce were among those who shared heartfelt condolences, praising Saoírse’s impact on Ireland. Singer RuthAnne recalled her bravery and the honor of singing with her.
Saoírse’s family, Roseanna, Ollie, and Farrah-Rose, thanked supporters for their love and asked for space during their final goodbye. Her legacy lives on through the Toy Show Appeal, which has improved the lives of thousands of Irish children.
As Ireland bids farewell to this remarkable young girl, her story will continue to inspire hope and resilience. Saoírse’s funeral will be held at St. Peter and Paul’s Church, Kiltullagh, on Sunday.
In the words of Ryan Tubridy, “The world is a poorer place without Saoírse, but I hope that twinkle in her eye shines on and on.” Saoírse’s brave heart will forever be etched in the memories of those who knew her and the countless lives she touched.
