His power and wealth make him one of the most talked-about figures in the world, with his actions often sparking heated debates. In a surprising move, former President Donald Trump granted Musk significant governmental influence by allowing him to establish the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), expanding its authority in recent weeks.
This decision has been met with mixed reactions, given Musk’s history of controversial statements and actions. A particularly unsettling moment came when he attended Trump’s inauguration and made a gesture that resembled a Nazi salute. While Musk has since dismissed the accusations, brushing them off as an overused attack, many found his response dismissive and tone-deaf. A man with his level of influence should be more mindful of how his actions are perceived, yet he continues to act with an air of untouchability.
Musk’s personal life has been just as contentious. His estranged daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson, has spoken openly about his absence and alleged mistreatment during her childhood. She has accused him of being unsupportive of her identity and of publicly distorting the truth about their relationship. Musk has denied her claims, but Vivian remains adamant that he was well aware of what he was agreeing to when he authorized her gender-affirming care.
Beyond his political and familial controversies, Musk’s personal relationships have also been scrutinized, particularly his involvement with Canadian musician Claire Boucher, known professionally as Grimes. Initially seen as an anti-capitalist artist who championed progressive causes, Grimes shocked her fans when she entered a relationship with the world’s richest man. The contradiction between her supposed values and her actions became even more glaring when she publicly defended Musk’s business practices, including his resistance to Tesla workers unionizing.
Despite her past advocacy for female and queer artists, she now finds herself tied to a man who has been accused of dismissing these very communities. While she claims to support progressive causes, she welcomed three children with Musk, even using surrogacy for the latter two. The most ironic part? She now publicly laments the legal battle over their custody, seemingly shocked by Musk’s tactics despite his well-documented history.
Grimes continues to present herself as a socially conscious artist while simultaneously seeking sympathy for her experiences with Musk. She has struggled to maintain a consistent stance, at times denouncing him and at other times expressing admiration for his gaming skills. Her reluctance to fully distance herself from him, even while decrying his treatment of her, only adds to the confusion.
If Grimes were to acknowledge that she abandoned her previous values and willingly embraced a different life, it would at least be an honest admission. Instead, she continues to straddle two worlds, expecting public support without taking full responsibility for her choices.
At this point, the façade is wearing thin. Grimes is no different from those she once criticized, and it’s time we stop pretending otherwise.
