Mariska Hargitay, known for her role in “Law & Order,” recently appeared in a rare photo embracing her adopted daughter, Amaya, who is now 12 years old. The picture was a heartfelt moment shared by a close friend on social media, capturing a family gathering at a restaurant. Alongside Mariska were her husband, Peter Hermann, and their children, including Amaya, whose adoption story is one of resilience, hope, and love.
Years before Amaya became part of their family, Mariska and Peter endured heartbreak when a planned adoption fell through. A mother who had initially chosen them to adopt her baby changed her mind after giving birth, leaving them devastated. The experience was painful, but they remained hopeful, determined to grow their family through adoption.
Their patience was rewarded when they connected with another expectant mother who was certain about placing her child with them. Mariska recalled being moved by the woman’s strength and kindness. The fact that she was African-American never posed a concern for the couple; they embraced the idea of a multiracial family, believing it to be a beautiful reflection of the world.
When Amaya was born in April 2011, the family was overjoyed. Mariska described the newborn as alert and full of love from the moment she arrived. Their eldest son, August, took his role as a big brother seriously, proudly calling Amaya “his baby” and promising to protect her.
Shortly after Amaya’s arrival, fate intervened once more. During a routine call, their lawyer informed them about a baby boy who needed a home. Without hesitation, Mariska and Peter welcomed Andrew into their family, completing their dream of having a big, loving household.
Looking back, Mariska acknowledges the challenges they faced but believes everything happened as it was meant to. Today, she cherishes the life she has built with her husband and children, grateful for the journey that led them to become a family.
