A young boy’s bravery and quick thinking have saved his family from a potentially disastrous situation. Seven-year-old Chase Poust swam for an hour against a strong current to get help for his father and four-year-old sister, who were stranded in a river.
The family had set out on a boat trip on the St. Johns River in Jacksonville, Florida, on the Friday of Memorial Day weekend. Chase’s father, Steven, had anchored the boat so he could do some fishing while Chase and his sister, Abigail, swam nearby.
However, the current proved to be much stronger than Steven had anticipated, and before long, Abigail was pulled away from the boat. Chase, who wasn’t wearing a life jacket, let go of the boat to try and help his sister. Steven also jumped into the water to try and grab Abigail, but she continued to drift away.
In a remarkable display of courage and determination, Chase swam against the current for an hour until he reached the shore. From there, he ran to get help, and his father and sister were eventually rescued with the assistance of the Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
