Actor Gary Sinise and his family are grappling with unbearable grief following the passing of his 33-year-old son, McCanna Anthony “Mac” Sinise. Mac’s courageous battle with cancer came to an end on January 5.
Gary, 68, shared the devastating news on the Gary Sinise Foundation’s website and Instagram, revealing Mac’s five-year struggle with chordoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer. This heartbreaking diagnosis came shortly after Gary’s wife, Moira Harris, received her own cancer diagnosis.
While Moira successfully overcame breast cancer, Mac’s condition steadily worsened, gradually taking away his strength and mobility. Despite these challenges, Mac’s resilience and passion for music never wavered.
As a talented drummer and songwriter, Mac performed alongside his father in the Lt. Dan Band and worked as an assistant manager of education and outreach for the Gary Sinise Foundation. His determination inspired many, even as he underwent five spine surgeries between 2018 and 2020.
Mac’s creativity flourished, culminating in the completion of his album, “Resurrection & Revival,” just before his passing. Gary proudly announced plans to release the album on vinyl, ensuring Mac’s legacy lives on.
In a poignant statement, Gary expressed the overwhelming pain of losing a child. “As parents, losing a child is unimaginable. My heart goes out to all who have endured similar losses.” He acknowledged the struggles many families face, including those of fallen heroes.
Gary honored Mac’s unwavering spirit, saying, “Mac fought an uncurable cancer with unrelenting courage. Though our hearts ache, we find solace in knowing he’s no longer struggling.”
The Sinise family, including Mac’s sisters, nieces, nephews, and extended relatives, will continue to cherish his memory. Gary’s love and admiration for his son shine through in his words, ensuring Mac’s legacy inspires and uplifts all who knew him.
