At 70, Kathie Lee Gifford thought she was recovering well from her hip replacement surgery. However, her active lifestyle took a toll, and she suffered a shocking setback. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Gifford revealed that she was hospitalized for over a week due to a fractured pelvis.
Gifford admits that she overexerted herself, moving 300 books during a signing event in Nashville. “I weakened my body,” she acknowledges. The next day, a simple trip to the door resulted in a devastating fall.
“I was weak in that spot,” Gifford explains. “The pelvis is unbelievably painful.” The former Today co-host underwent physical therapy in the hospital, acknowledging that her body’s limitations had changed with age.
Gifford describes this experience as “humbling” and recognizes the need to slow down. “The Lord is telling me it’s time to stop running and smell the roses,” she reflects. Despite the challenges, Gifford remains optimistic, focusing on her faith and commitment to spreading hope.
Her latest book, Herod and Mary, was released amidst her recovery. This historical nonfiction work explores the story of King Herod and Mary, the mother of Jesus. Gifford’s passion project was inspired by a rabbinical trip to Israel and encouraged by her son Cody.
As Gifford navigates this difficult period, she remains dedicated to her faith and helping others. “I pray that I would be useful, kind, and loving to people,” she says. “I’m a strong woman, but I’m also a woman who’s trying to do the right thing and represent the kingdom of God.”
Gifford’s resilience shines through as she looks forward to recovering and returning to her farm. “It’s summer for everybody but me,” she quips. “But I’ll get there, and I’ll stick my feet in my salt pool.” For now, Gifford is listening to her body and embracing a newfound appreciation for life’s simpler joys.
