If you have a $2 bill stashed away for good luck, it’s time to take a closer look. Those bills might be worth more than you think. In fact, certain $2 bills can sell for thousands of dollars.
According to U.S. Currency Auctions, uncirculated $2 bills from 1890 can fetch at least $4,500. Similarly, uncirculated bills from nearly every year between 1862 and 1917 can sell for at least $1,000. The value of these bills depends on factors like printing method and location.
Even newer bills can have significant value. For example, a $2 bill printed in 2003 sold at an auction for $2,400 in 2022. This particular bill had a low serial number and was sold through Heritage Auctions. It was later resold for $4,000.
So, are $2 bills rare? According to the Federal Reserve, there were 1.5 billion $2 bills in circulation in 2022, a small fraction of the total $54.1 billion of currency circulated that year.
The $2 bill features Thomas Jefferson’s face on the front and a portrait of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on the back. Despite its unique design, the $2 bill has a negative reputation due to superstitions and its association with illegal activities. However, the U.S. Treasury attempted to popularize the bill in the early 20th century, and it was reintroduced in 1976 as the United States approached its bicentennial. Today, the $2 bill remains in circulation, and its value can surprise even the most seasoned collectors.
