A recent study published in the International Journal of Fashion Design, Technology, and Education has confirmed this shift, revealing that the average American woman now wears a size 16 to 18, marking a significant departure from the traditional size 14.

The study, which analyzed data from over 5,500 women in the United States, found that the average waist size has increased by approximately 2.6 inches over the past two decades, from 34.9 inches to 37.5 inches. According to Susan Dunn, a lead expert on the study, this information is crucial in promoting positive body image among women. “Just knowing where the average is can help a lot of women with their self-image,” Dunn explained.

Dunn, along with co-author Deborah Christel, is urging the fashion industry to adapt to these changes and update their sizing standards to reflect the reality of the modern American woman. “These women aren’t going away, they aren’t going to disappear, and they deserve to have clothing,” Dunn emphasized. The message is clear: it’s time for clothing designers to embrace inclusivity and cater to the diverse range of body types and sizes that exist in the world today.
