Remembering Charles Dierkop: A Hollywood Legend Passes Away

The world of cinema has lost a beloved character actor, Charles Dierkop, who passed away on February 25 at the age of 87. Dierkop is best known for his iconic role as outlaw George ‘Flat Nose’ Curry in the classic Western film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford.

Dierkop’s remarkable career spanned decades, with notable roles in films like The Sting, where he once again shared the screen with Newman and Redford. He also appeared in the popular police procedural series Police Woman, starring Angie Dickinson. With a career that began in the 1960s, Dierkop established himself as a talented and versatile character actor.

Born in La Crosse, Wisconsin in 1936, Dierkop’s life took a dramatic turn when he enlisted in the US military and served in Korea. After his discharge, he pursued his passion for acting, enrolling in the American Foundation of Dramatic Arts in Philadelphia. It was there that he met his future wife, Joan Addis, with whom he had two children.

In a 2018 interview, Dierkop fondly recalled being cast in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. He attributed his success in landing the role to his unique physical feature – a nose broken several times during his childhood. Dierkop’s humility and good humor shone through in his recollection of the experience.

As the news of Dierkop’s passing spreads, fans and fellow actors alike are paying tribute to his remarkable talent and enduring legacy. His contributions to the world of cinema will be remembered for generations to come.
