A Texas mother’s bravery and selflessness have been hailed as heroic after she turned her own son in to the police, fearing he was planning a school massacre. Nicole Schubert’s decision was not taken lightly, but she knew it was the only way to save countless lives, including her son’s.
In 2019, Schubert discovered her 17-year-old son’s journal, which detailed a chilling plan to carry out a mass shooting at his school. The journal described how he would begin his rampage by killing his mother and her boyfriend, before moving on to his school. Schubert was horrified by what she read and knew she had to act fast.
Despite the natural instinct to protect her child, Schubert realized that turning him in was the only way to prevent a tragedy. She called the police and reported her son’s plans, and he was subsequently arrested and charged with harassment and making threats.
The court ordered the boy to undergo a mental evaluation program, community supervision, and community service. Schubert’s son has since completed his high school degree and is seeking help for depression. He also plans to attend college in the near future.
Schubert’s decision to turn her son in was not easy, but she has no regrets. She hopes that her story will serve as a warning to other parents to be vigilant and aware of their children’s activities. “Stay in their business,” she advises. “Even if they don’t like it. As parents, it’s our job to know what our kids are doing.”
