Sahar Tabar, a 19-year-old Iranian woman, made headlines for undergoing numerous plastic surgeries in an attempt to transform her appearance. Her drastic makeover, which included liposuction and nose reshaping, sparked controversy and debate online. Tabar’s new look earned her the nickname ‘Iran’s Zombie Angelina Jolie.’
Tabar’s transformation was not just physical; she also gained a massive following on social media. Her Instagram account, which boasted almost four million followers, featured pictures of her heavily altered appearance. However, it is unclear how many of these surgeries were actually performed, as some have suggested that the pictures may have been heavily edited or digitally altered.
Tabar’s mother was not pleased with her daughter’s social media presence, but Sahar was determined to become famous. She claimed that cyberspace was an easy way to gain fame, and she used her platform to express herself through her unusual appearance. In an interview, Tabar stated that she did not intend to resemble Angelina Jolie or the Corpse Bride, but rather saw herself as a muse and a work of art.
However, Tabar’s newfound fame came with a price. In October 2019, she was arrested for her ‘blasphemous’ pictures on Instagram. She was also accused of illegally buying property, instigating violence, and influencing the youth negatively. Tabar was sentenced to 10 years in prison and was sent to Qarchak Prison, notorious for being one of the worst prisons for women.
After serving 14 months, Tabar was released from jail. Her release was allegedly due to the death of Mahsa Amini, who was arrested and beaten by the Iranian police for wearing her hijab incorrectly. Tabar’s case had sparked outrage, with many calling for her release. Iranian activist Masih Alinejad had even appealed to Angelina Jolie to speak out on Tabar’s behalf, highlighting the harsh treatment of women in Iran.”
