Mary Ann Bevan, dubbed the “Ugliest Woman in the World,” was one such individual. Born in 1874 in East London, Mary Ann’s life took a dramatic turn when she developed acromegaly, a rare condition causing excessive growth hormone production.
Despite her condition, Mary Ann led a relatively normal life, working as a nurse and marrying Thomas Bevan. However, after Thomas’s untimely death, Mary Ann struggled to support her four children. Her appearance changed drastically due to acromegaly, making it impossible to find employment.
Desperate to provide for her children, Mary Ann responded to an advertisement seeking the “ugliest woman” for a circus act. Claude Bartram, an agent for Barnum and Bailey, discovered Mary Ann and saw beyond her physical appearance.
Mary Ann’s story is one of resilience and sacrifice. She traveled to New York, becoming a sensation at the Coney Island Circus. Despite facing ridicule and exploitation, she earned a substantial income, enabling her to send her children to boarding school in England.
Renowned neurosurgeon Harvey Cushing spoke out against the immorality of exploiting circus performers. However, Mary Ann’s determination to provide for her family kept her going.
Mary Ann’s legacy extends beyond her circus fame. She exemplified true beauty by sacrificing everything for her loved ones. Her story serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of compassion and understanding.
Mary Ann passed away in 1933, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering dedication to her family. Her children fulfilled her dying wish, burying her in her native England. Today, Mary Ann rests in peace at Ladywell and Brockley Cemetery.
