When it comes to getting a good night’s sleep, women may want to consider snuggling up with their canine companions. A recent study conducted by Canisius College in New York found that women sleep better next to dogs than humans or cats.
Led by animal behaviorist Christy Hoffman, Ph.D., the research surveyed nearly 1,000 women across the United States. The results showed that 55% of participants shared their bed with at least one dog, while 31% shared with a cat, and 57% with a human partner.
Hoffman discovered that dogs’ sleeping patterns, which closely resemble those of humans, may be a key factor. Unlike cats, dogs tend to sleep more soundly and consistently, making them less disruptive bedmates.
Additionally, dogs require regular schedules and responsibilities, such as morning walks, which can help owners maintain a routine and improve sleep quality. Their stillness and security also provide comfort, with women reporting feeling safer with their dogs by their side.
In fact, Hoffman found that dog owners tended to go to bed earlier and wake up earlier than cat owners, and maintained more consistent sleep schedules. While individual experiences may vary, the study suggests that dogs can make ideal sleep companions.
However, more research is needed to confirm these findings. Hoffman notes that future studies using Fitbit-like devices could provide valuable insights into the impact of pets on sleep quality.
For now, women seeking better sleep may want to consider inviting their furry friends into bed. As Hoffman concludes, “Developing a clearer picture of how pets affect sleep quality can have significant implications for improving overall well-being.
