Joan Van Ark’s illustrious career in Hollywood spans decades, but her iconic role as Valene Ewing on the primetime soap opera Knots Landing remains etched in the minds of fans worldwide.
Born on June 16, 1943, in New York City, Joan’s passion for performing emerged at a young age. A pivotal encounter with acclaimed actress Julie Harris in Denver changed her life’s trajectory. Harris persuaded Joan to attend Yale Drama School, securing a scholarship that made her the second woman to enroll.
Joan’s transition from theater to television led to roles in Temperature’s Rising, Spider-Woman, Days of Our Lives, and Bonanza. Her breakthrough came in 1978 with multiple appearances as Valene Ewing on Dallas, which spawned the spin-off Knots Landing.
Initially hesitant, Joan’s husband encouraged her to accept the role, despite her commitments to other projects. As Valene Ewing, Joan became a leading character for 13 seasons, forging an unbreakable bond with her on-screen partner Ted Shackelford.
In a surprising twist, Julie Harris joined the show as Valene’s mother, a casting decision that left Joan overwhelmed. “I couldn’t believe they had picked her to be my mother,” she recalled.
After 327 episodes, Joan departed Knots Landing, acknowledging her departure contributed to the show’s cancellation. Though difficult, she sought new challenges.
Joan’s post-Knots Landing career included a notable stint on The Young and The Restless as Gloria Fisher. Her legacy, however, remains deeply intertwined with Valene Ewing.
Reflecting on her time on Knots Landing, Joan expressed gratitude for the experience and relationships forged. “The people are my family–we have shared marriages, deaths, divorces.” Her enduring connection to the show and its impact on her life remains undeniable.
As Joan Van Ark’s remarkable journey continues, her portrayal of Valene Ewing remains an indelible mark on television history.
