1972 was a year of significant milestones, marked by Don McLean’s chart-topping hit “American Pie,” Richard Nixon’s presidency amidst the Watergate Scandal, the launch of NASA’s Space Shuttle program, and Bob Barker’s rise to fame as the charismatic host of “The Price is Right” ¹. This year, Barker reaches a remarkable milestone – his 100th birthday.
Born on an Indian reservation in South Dakota, Barker’s life took a dramatic turn when he met his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Jo Gideon, at an Ella Fitzgerald concert during his time in the United States Navy Reserve. After marrying in 1945, Barker pursued an economics degree and began his journey to stardom.
Barker’s big break came when game show producer Ralph Edwards discovered him hosting a radio show in Los Angeles. Edwards tapped Barker to host “Truth or Consequences,” catapulting him to fame from 1956 to 1975. Barker also hosted the Miss Universe and Miss USA pageants starting in 1967. However, it was his iconic role as host of “The Price is Right” in 1972 that cemented his status as a household name.
As the longest-running game show in history, “The Price is Right” earned Barker 14 Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Game Show Host and four Emmys as executive producer. Barker’s success was largely attributed to his late wife, Dorothy, whom he credited with giving him the confidence to pursue his dreams.
After Dorothy’s passing in 1981, Barker found love again with Nancy Burnet, his partner of 40 years. Burnet attributes Barker’s good health to his minimal use of medication and dedication to a healthy lifestyle as a long-time vegetarian. Despite turning 99, Barker only takes one prescription medication for his thyroid.
Beyond his showbiz accomplishments, Barker has made a lasting impact as an animal rights advocate. Inspired by Dorothy’s ethical choices, Barker established the DJ&T Foundation, supporting animal rights organizations and donating millions to prestigious law schools like Harvard and Columbia.
Barker’s legacy extends far beyond his on-screen persona. Alongside Nancy, he campaigns against animal entertainment and raises awareness about animal mistreatment. As Barker celebrates his 100th birthday, we honor his incredible journey, marked by achievements and contributions that have left an indelible mark on the world.
